7.15-8.30pm today

 

lots of canada geese - including  a min of  10 young  

a flock of 23 Mallards....mostly  appearing to be eclipsed males

1 solo male Mallard..non-eclipsed

2 pied wagtails

2-3 meadow pipits displaying

a pair of lapwing with at least 1 very recently hatched young...

1 stock dove

2 grey heron

1 cormorant

2 great black backed gulls ....surveying the geese flock

1 coot

2 lesser black backs

1 song thrush giving a belting song at top end

2 willow warblers in song

1 wren

1 blackbird

crows , wood pigeons, black headed gulls of course

2 male reed buntings singing

a party of long-tailed tits

swallows, swifts, sand martins in the air....but small numbers.....

visit holden wood from 1.15-4.30 ..nice to meet and talk to Andy there!

1 g c grebe
2 different cormorants
2 min ravens
2 kestrels
24 lapwing min on western side of res
pair with unseen young today in usual breeding field.....chick must have gone under the fence
in song - 1 reed bunting, dunnock, song thrush, 1 willow warbler, 1 wren
1 coot
gatherings of Woodpigeons....a few groups seen 2-3 with at least 10 in.....
1 grey wag
2 oystercatcher heard
mallards around 15-20
1 linnet
1 grey heron

walked up to the start of musbury - pair of stonechat along path up from res....ticking away!

meadow pipits seen

in the rushes lots of baby toads....hundreds....crawling through grass.....

on the top - a common frog seen
rabbit
1 kestrel
2-3 meadow pipits
2 linnets

lots of butterflies  mainly meadow brown up to the top, some small skippers,.....

a big all dark dragonfly

the blue damsel flies

A couple of extra bits from higher up, Sarfraz:

2 great crested grebes on Calf Hey

2 noisy common sandpipers Jamestone

Still 2 coots on Holden Wood earlier, plus a moorhen

Visit on Thursday from about 1.30-3.30pm and

1 Grey Heron
1 Cormorant
min of 15 Mallard
1 fem with 4 nearly fully grown young
2 coots
1 immature moorhen
1 sparrowhawk male
usual swallows martins swifts
willow warbler in scrub at top
blackcap one singing from scrub on grane road side and other from musbury side in trees
usual meadow pipits, 1 reed bunting, crows, woodpigeons, magpies, black headed gulls

min 24 lapwing - the pair wit that one small chick were in hiding or has met an untimely demise..

1 oystercatcher on farm
2 little ringed plovers

 

song thrush singing from hedge at top

 stoenchats on path between  holden wood and ogden......no sign of young yet but  appear agitated so must have a clutch

2 green woodpeckers  one  heard from near dam at holden wood..other by old railway track between ogden and holden wood

walked on pathan half way to Ogden.....1 grey heron
female sparrowhawk


on the plus side plenty of butterflies - skippers, meadow browns, cabbage whites, a red admiral, tortoiseshells, some peacock, blue damsel flies , a large brown dragonfly quite big!

7.30-8.40pm today

25 adult mallard
1 female with at least 3 week to 2 week old young
2 moorhens - adult and an immature
1 coot
2 grey heron

min 50 lapwing
min 15 starlings
song thrush singing form top end
2 wren singing
1 willow warbler
1 sedge warbler - FINALLY got it here!

quite a few swallows and sand martins including some young
min2 goldfinch
2 linnet
a few meadow pipit
2-3 pied wagtails
1 grey wagtail
lots of canada geese


min 20 lesser black backed gulls flying very low over reservoir.....many young in there too...some young appear to be finding their own way ...unless the parents kept a very distant eye on them..

100 min black headed gulls many flying north...
