Not only did I get my first 2 House Sparrows (a female and a juvenile) since moving to a new address over a year ago but a very unusual one in many ways here. I looked out of the back bedroom window and a Lesser Black Backed Gull was perched on a pole. It was there for quite a long time watching cautiously but then it landed on a neighbours wall, three doors away! It then strutted over along the walls and onto my wall and ate for five minutes! It is definitely the best Eid Present i have had! I had noticed a Lesser Black adult and juve just over my roof on Sunday but did not think one would ever land. It looked really strange to see that here - a big dapper black and white bird with yellow legs and webbed feet adding itself to my garden list! I felt elated and mentioned it to my wife who said one of "Sea Gulls" has been visiting for the last few days!
Thanks Anthony! I should have added it was a birthday present too as I turned 21 (oh ok 36) on 26th of July but feeling a bit old now! LOL! Those reports from Haslingden are just randomly done.
Today I hear a cackling type sound and when I rushed to the window there Black Backed and Yellow legged friend looking at the window and making noises as if to ask "where is the food? No food was out so I put some bran flakes out. I did feel guilty no food was out for it especially since this could be a bird from the Bowland colony and it could flying in excess of 20 miles in search of food. It had flown off as soon as he heard a noise from the door. I assume it is a he as it is quite a big bird really dwarf's the Magpies that landed by it today. I watched to see if it would come back and surely it did. It always lands on the wall about 4-5 doors down and walks across the walls to our property. I have not got a clue as to what the neighbours think. Makes a change from the Woodpigeons, Magpies, Jackdaws we get mostly. It is amusing to watch as it sits on top of the post near my house and then flies to 4-5 doors down then walks back up to our property.
Be nice to get a Great Black Back or any other Gull. I do wonder if this bird will bring any of it's friends down? I have seen a few this year very close to peoples property, on garden walls - has a food source disappeared or changed?
