Back on Holden Wood this morning (assuming it's the same bird). Arrived some time between 9.00 and 9.30, still present when I left around 10.00

Present again at Holden Wood this morning. As yesterday no sign when I arrived around 9.00 but there on my return just after 11.00. Met Dave Howorth on the way up so he may possibly have seen it earlier.

Still there when I left about 11.20 (?), despite presence of two fishermen and a bolshy heron.

I think it dislikes the Heron more than the fishermen. It was within 10 metres of one fisherman once. I have a feeling it must roost somewhere in Darwen.

Brilliant!  Where did it fly in from?  Ogden side or Musbury?  I missed it by 20 minutes.  Standing there is worth it.  What was the falcon do you think?  Size wise it did not fit a Peregrine.  It did have a moustache, white throat, but not very strong streaking.  Compared to the black headed gull which it flew over when crossing the rest it did not look much bigger.  The gull and other birds would have surely risen up if a Peregrine.  Size can be contentious and the not strong marking underneath.  It looked brown when it flew into the tree.

What did you think it was?

I didn't see the GWE fly in, it caught my eye as I lowered the binoculars just as it was about to land.

As for the falcon, I'd say it was a hobby. I saw it again after you'd left, heading back towards the hillside above Grane Rd.

Worth the wait! You are part of an elite group who have seenb3 large Heron species in the UK. Will be a while before that club will get new members.
