I arrived at Holden Wood from the hillside above Ogden and stood watching the GWE pottering around the shallows. After a few minutes it took off and landed further down the reservoir, on the left as you look down it from the shallow end. Whilst watching it in the binoculars, another bird stuck its long white neck and head up out of the grass some way behind it. I thought it was another GWE at first! I rang Sarfraz, who I knew was still nearby, and described what I could see to him. It appeared that I had spotted my first little egret! However, when Sarfraz and Kevin arrived some 20 minutes later the bird was nowhere to be seen, despite an extensive search of the grassy bank. I've since looked up pictures of the bird and it was definitely a little egret.
