sparrowhawk - A male appears to have taken a long tailed tit on Saturday judging by the feathers it has left behind. I am now beginning to think that I am in fact feeding this bird rather than a collection of birds with my feeders. The feeders were much quieter on Sunday after this had happened.
great spotted woodpecker - 1 male
woodpigeon - 2
feral pigeon - 5
collared dove - 2
robin - 3
blackbird - 5
blue tit - 3
great tit - 2
coal tit - 2
long tailed tit - 6 (before the sparrowhawk visited)
Hi Kevin, I'm also troubled by a male Sparrowhawk at my feeders etc. As the Crow or should I say 'Hawk' flies I'm only a few hundred yards from you, I've tried to research Sparrowhawk territory or ranges with little success. Are they territorial and could we be being visited by the same bird.?
There's every chance it could be the same bird. The one that visits our feeders (assuming there is only one) seems to put the fear of god into the local birds and then disappears for a couple of days. When the birds are a bit more confident he returns and wreaks havoc. Some of the birds we do get fly in from The Glen (particularly gold, green and chaffinch), so I assume that sometimes they fly the other way as well, so there must be some birds that visit your feeders as well as mine. I would guess that there are probably several sparrowhawks in the area.
