A top spot from a top birder (Kevin) who I must say is in my opinion probably one of the best in Lancashire for spotting......a quick record shot of the bird from today Rossendale Bittern record shot July 2015 (1 of 1).jpg

A very poor record shot in very poor weather...

Well done Kevin, good find.  Apparently not there from 4.45 - 5.30 as pe R Archer and D Nuttall.

Great photos given the conditions chaps.  Glad a few folk got to see the bird before it went into hiding.

cheers Kevin

Very limited info on web re ageing Bitterns.

But it looks very fresh feathered, very clean yellow legs, not much crown and moustache patches which all suggests a juvenile bird.

The Bittern was sat in a willow overhanging the lodge from 20:30-21:00 when I left it attempting to feed.
It seems quite inexperience at feeding and made several attempts to catch prey by stretching itself right to the surface of the water but it was still too far away to catch anything again suggesting it is a juvenile bird.
Regards,
David Nuttall.

From 8.45-9.55 with Craggy no show. Rob Archer was there from much earlier but no show for him as well - nice to meet Rob as always! Nice to meet Dave Howarth on way up to see it as we turned back.

Great find by Kevin Lister, who works tirelessly to find birds in the Rossendale area. Once again well done Kevin. Its all appreciated.
