Huge numbers of Gulls passing over the Irwell valley this afternoon all heading towards Ashworh moor, so scope collected,and drove up to the reservoir, below is the best count I could manage in the mist, rain and failing light.
It should be noted that I gave up when I could no longer see at around 1615 hours, but gulls were still arriving in large numbers.
Black-headed........2150.
Common...............450.
Herring/Lesser Black-backed......1100 mostly immature and difficult to separate in those conditions.
Great Black-backed.......35
I think the above is conservative as the total could be well over 4000.
