First impressions Iceland Gull.  Second - looks a bit big and stocky.   If the other Gulls around it are all Herring/Lesser complex then it is Iceland!   If any of them are Great Black-Backs then....Glaucous or Hybrid species could be a contender?116.JPG117.JPG116.JPG117.JPG

Hi Dave,

Iceland it has to be - too cute and dove-ish to be a Glaucous Gull. Maybe it looks a bit bigger because it is a larger sized one OR it has eaten a lot at the dumps or it's feathers are ruffled because it is having a wash.

In terms of statistics - whether it was an Iceland Gull or Glaucous Gull, might be a surprise to some of you as I do get around but this would have been my second record of either species in the UK. My first Iceland Gull was a specimen outside a Lesser Black Backed flock in a field near Bashal Eaves. Surprisingly it was in May 2011. My first Glaucous was the small looking one at Southport in December 2011. I have seen plenty of Glaucous Gulls in Iceland as well as a lone Iceland Gull.

Thanks!

Nice.

It was great to be able to compare both these species together as Fishmoor res a few years back. Funny as sifting through the many gulls it took agaes to find both Iceland and Glauc but once spotted they stuck out like a sore thumb.

Hi Ste,

The biggest problem is numbers - when you have hundreds it is demoralising going through them all then to find that different one. How people can pick out Caspian Gulls in so many Herring Gulls is amazing. The more I try to learn about Gulls the less I know.

Here is a great photo comparing both Iceland and Glaucous side by side.
