Cormorant, c6,

Grey Heron, 1 on Ogden,

Canada Goose, c30, several pairs and some sitting birds,

Mallard, c10 adults, mainly males but female on Holden wood with c5 ducklings,

Teal, pair on pasture at Holden Wood,

Goldeneye, pair and 2 females on Holden Wood, females on Ogden and 2 females in Jamestones,

Buzzard, soaring pair and 2 singles,

Sparrowhawk, female over Holden Wood,

Pheasant, calling male,

Coot, minimum of 7 on Holden Wood,

Lapwing, c8 at Holden Wood,

Curlew, 3 on the tops,

Snipe, 1 'chipping' on the tops,

Jack Snipe, 3 flushed off the tops within 50 yards of each other,

Oystercatcher, pair at Calf Hey, pair at Jamestones and single at Holden Wood,

B.H.Gull, c20,

L.B.B.Gull, c12 over,

Herring Gull, c6 over,

Stock Dove, just a single at Jamestones,

Wood Pigeon, c20 in flocks to 6,

Green Woodpecker, yaffling bird at Calf Hey & distantly at Holden Wood,

Skylark, c12 singing birds on the tops,

Sand Martin, 2 near Troy,

Meadow Pipit, c30, many in display,

Pied Wagtail, c6,

Grey Wagtail, 2 singles,

Wheatear, male near Troy,

Stonechat, pair near Ogden collecting nesting material,

Song Thrush, 2 at Calf Hey,

Mistle Thrush, singing bird near Heap Clough,

Willow Warbler, singing bird near Holden Wood,

Coal Tit, singing birds at Calf Hey,

Jay, calling birds near Calf Hey,

Chaffinch, c12 singing birds,

Goldfinch, 1,

Siskin, c6 mainly Calf Hey & Troy,

Reed Bunting, singing birds at Holden Wood & Ogden.

Hi Dave

I was up at Grane for the WEBS count about one hour later than you, meeting Andy along the way and we can add the following

  • cormorants increased to 12 at Holden Wood
  • Canada goose, probably nearer 70 birds seen, with at least 48 at Holden Wood
  • the female mallard had 4 ducklings at Holden Wood
  • there was another pair of teal at Holden Wood
  • there were 2 males and 2 females at Holden Wood and a female on Ogden, but we didn't see any in Jamestones
  • kestrel - 1 over Jamestones
  • moorhen - 1 at Holden Wood and 1 at Troy 
  • black headed gull - 1pr were copulating at Holden Wood
  • stock dove - 2 in Jamestones and 1 across the road from The Duke of Wellington
  • sand martin - 4 at Jamestones/ Troy. 2 Holden Wood may just have come down from the quarry
  • grey wagtail - 1pr at Holden Wood, 1 at Calf Hey & 1pr at Jamestones
  • wheatear - 1pr near Jamestones
  • willow warbler - another singing bird at Heap Clough
  • chiffchaff - 1 at Holden Wood
  • goldcrest - singing birds at Calf Hey and Clough Head
  • nuthatch - 1 singing at Calf Hey
  • treecreeper - 1 at Calf Hey
  • long tailed tit - calling birds at Heap Clough
  • reed bunting - 1pr and 3 males at Holden Wood

the walk back to Rawtenstall produced the following

  • buzzard - singles over Helmshore & EBSW
  • sparrowhawk - 1 male over EBSW
  • swallow - c50 at EBSW
  • house martin - min 3 at EBSW
  • sand martin - min 1 at EBSW
  • grey wagtail - 1 at Helmshore Textile Museum, 1 at Snig Hole & 1 at Ravenshore
  • chiffchaff - 1 at Camms, 3 near Helmshore Textile Museum, 1 at EBSW, 1 at K Steels and 1 at Groundwork
  • willow warbler - 1 at EBSW
  • blackcap - 1 at EBSW
  • nuthatch - 1 at Helmshore Textile Museum & 1 at Ravenshore
  • dipper - 1 at Ravenshore and 1 at Ewood Bridge
  • siskin - calling bird near Bowl Alley
