First brambling (female) of the autumn/ winter seen this afternoon.  1 goldcrest also seen. 1 or 2 nuthatches have been seen recently, which is unusual here.

A male sparrowhawk (the first I've seen here for a while) narrowly missed a goldfinch this morning. The feeders are much quieter than usual.  We usually get a decent number of finches, but recently we have seen very few, particularly greenfinches.  Ten years ago there would be a flock of 60 greenfinches in the area.  It is unusual at the moment to see more than 10. Birds visiting recently are as follows

  • sparrowhawk - the aforementioned male
  • great spotted woodpecker - min 1
  • collared dove - 2
  • woodpigeon - 1
  • blue tit - min 4
  • great tit - min 4
  • coal tit - min 4
  • long tailed tit - min 6 (this morning birds came and fed 4ft away from me without realising I was stood there)
  • song thrush - 1
  • blackbird - min 6
  • robin - 2/3
  • starling - 1
  • wren - 2
  • dunnock - 1 (singing this morning)
  • magpie - 2
  • jackdaw - 4
  • house sparrow - min 6
  • chaffinch - c10
  • goldfinch - at least 8 were present this morning until the sparrowhawk visited
  • greenfinch - c8
  • bullfinch - min 1m & 1f

nuthatches have ceased visiting and there have been no further sightings of bramblings

cheers Kevin

Hi Kevin,

My feeding stations are very similar to your sightings, Tit numbers are not bad but finch numbers are poor, I have never had big Greenfinch numbers, others are all down except Chaffinch.

I dont get Starlings here but am plagued by Jackdaws early and late to such an extent that I dont put fresh food out until the Jackdaws have moved through at around 0930 hrs.

Regards Brian.

Female brambling present today.

Male sparrowhawk also present.

A charm of 23 goldfinch arrived in the afternoon, the highest count all winter.

Greenfinch numbers remain low, with only 5 seen at any time today. A few years ago flocks of 40 - 60 were the norm for us

cheers Kevin
