John and I, with Tom Dunbar from Butterfly Conservation led a search for white letter hairstreaks in Rossendale today with several other Butterfly Conservation members. After a cloudy start we were fortunate to be rewarded with a enough sunshine to bring a few butterflies out as follows

  • white letter hairstreak - min 6 at Hugh Mill, min 12 at New Brighton & c5 at Helmshore Textile Museum
  • small skipper - 1 at Wesley Place / Newchurch Road
  • red admiral - 3 at Park Road / Newchurch Road, 3 at Helmshore Textiles Museum
  • comma - 1 at Hugh Mill, 1 at New Brighton & 2 at Helmshore Textiles Museum (2 seen in Waterfoot on Monday last week also. Unusually there appears to be more commas than small tortoiseshells at present)
  • small tortoiseshell - 1 at Park Road / Newchurch Road, 1 at Helmshore Textiles Museum
  • gatekeeper - 1 at Helmshore Textiles Museum
  • meadow brown - 1 at New Brighton & 1 at Helmshore Textiles Museum
  • green veined white - between 1 - 5 at several sites
  • large white - 1 at Hugh Mill, 1 at New Brighton, 2 at Wesley Place / Newchurch Road & 6 at Helmshore Textiles Museum (first adults I've seen this year)

cheers Kevin, John and other BC members
