One male common scoter Calf Hey. Other waterfowl today - 2 great crested grebes, 3 teal, 1 cormorant and a few moorhens HWR, pair tufted duck back on Jamestones.

20 golden plovers above Jamestones heading N towards (over?) the moors. Curlews bubbling south of HWR and north of Jamestones - perhaps a few more are finally coming back in?

Summer migrants:-

Swallow - 1 EBSW early then 1,4,3 around Grane (all flying west/north west). Sarfraz and Craggy had a few more plus some sand martins

Wheatear - groups of 1,3,3 above Jamestones/Troy and 3 on Cribden Flats. Of the 10 three females but no singing birds yet

Blackcap and willow warbler at EBSW were presumably the same birds seen by Mr Fyldes (both near the entrance)

Chiffchaff - in addition to the Groundwork bird also at Irwell Vale and 2 along the old railway Helmshore.

Linnet - flock of 23 in the field next to Halo and 3 on the way down to Rawtenstall.

In view of Bob's post I decided to make a special effort to count great spotted woodpeckers today and recorded a grand total of zero.

Andy
