06 July approx. 15 Lapwing at Holden Wood almost all looked immatures.

10 July 6 Mediterranean Gulls  over Jamestone 2 3 adults heading south to Belmont and 2 adults with 1 juvenile heading North must be feeding above Jamestones or down into Broadfield area of Hyndburn.  All Common Scoter seen earlier had disappeared. 2 female Wheatears above Jamestone's

12 July minimum of 10 White Letter Hairstreaks at a spot near Edenfield.  Other butterflies seen include:- my first ever Rossendale Comma, Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Green Veined White, Meadow Brown, Small Skipper, a freshly emerged Peacock, Small White, Ringlet and Small Heath

Mediterranean Gull over Tesco in Haslingden during afternoon.

Approx 100 Rooks feeding in a field around Turn - many young ones too.

14 July Mallard with 5 ducklings at Holden Wood must be nearly 2 weeks old.

16 July  - trip around Grane water levels at maximum levels so dont expect much in terms of scarce waders dropping in.  First Gatekeeper Butterflies seen 3 at Holden Wood, 1 at Ogden, 2 at Calf Hey, 3 at Quarries.   3 Teal at Holden Wood.  Some action at Heap Clough and the Quarries 22 Mistle Thrush together, Curlew with young behind Clough Head, first Brown Hawker seen at Troy Quarry.  Min 4 Great Spotted Woodpeckers visiting gardens on Grane Road which back onto Heap Clough. Family of Treecreeper at Heap Clough - min 5 Treecreeper family- some dropping down on floor and drinking from a puddle even.

20 July less Swifts seen over Haslingden.   Visit to Holden Wood Blackbird family heard in Holden Arms Car Park, Dunnock family present too.   Coot on Holden Wood hiding in rushes then popped out for a short time.  3 Song Thrush looked like family party.

21 July  - visit to Grane was quite productive.   In the scrub by car park a family of 4 min Blackcap.  Quite a few Goldfinch here too min 20, 2 Dunnocks.  Around the reservoir itself min 12 Stonechat min 10 were immatures perching on freshly cut grass and feeding, min 12 Willow Warblers 2 family parties 1 in hedgerow and another in ferns under old tram track.  Min 4 Reed Buntings small family party.  Min 6 Wrens in ferns under tram tracks.

Great Spotted Woodpecker at Calf Hey.  No Crossbills.  1 Great Created Grebe on Ogden.

On the way back from Ogden at around 12.35 a Marsh Harrier  flew across from Musden Heights, circling then North to Heap Clough area.  It looked to have been moving not very high above the ground so I assume hunting in the area.  Nearly wrote it off as a Buzzard I have seen 3 Marsh Harriers now in ROC area and all I wrote off as Buzzards in first few seconds.

Family of min 8 Wrens in car park at Holden Arms.

12 Swifts chasing one another over Haslingden today.  Approx 100 Jackdaws on the roof of Lacey Court around 7.45pm.   2 Ravels flying from Grane to Rawtenstall 8.45pm.

7th August - a female/juv Marsh Harrier was seen over Holden Wood Res by Bury Birder Richard Thew - almost certainly the same Andy Young had 2 days later as it was heading south east along the edge of the hill to Musbury I daresay.   It must be the same bird I saw on July 21 and Craig had a few days before Andy.

9th August - Kingfisher at  Helmshore Textile Museum Pond

14 August - forgot to add 8 Wheatears around Jamestones.

15 August  - 1 Green Sandpiper at Holden Wood.  Larger bird of prey with 2 Buzzards seen over Irwell where it possibly crosses A56 seen in afternoon - assume it was an Osprey but could not confirm it.  4 Kestrels hunting around highest point of Grane Road.

Lots of rain but the water level at Holden Wood is not going up past a certain level.  It may get drier end of next week but that is a long way away and it will be tail end of wader passage.   Numbers of Mallards and Black-headed Gulls returning with water levels decreasing.

16-08-20   min 200 Starlings in flight probably feeding on Haslingden High Playing Fields.

20-08-20  - 3 Whinchat above Troy - very showy - the best I have ever seen.  min 30 Linnet in the area.  Juvenile Common Gull at Holden Wood Res - what a stunning and smart bird!   2 Teals at Holden Wood Res.  Buzzard juvenile showing well around Ogden res.  Min 150 Goldfinch around Holden Wood.

21-08-20  - Highlights - 1 Swift above Ogden Res, Merlin flew Northwards from Ogden and a Hen Harrier flew over the woods at Calf Hey - size looked a female.   60 House Martins above Ogden res, 20 above Jamestones.  10 Sand Martins above Jamestones.

22-08-20    - 1 pale ...white looking wader flew from channel ....it was probably on the water swimming.....inclined to think it was a Phalarope but could not be relocated.   It flew down towards the Cormorant roost - not sure if it carried on but could not be seen.  Then again I had not noticed it when I was scanning the area from near the metal gate.  A Common Sandpiper had flown off from the mud on my arrival.    Juvenile Common Gull at Holden Wood Res - 4 species of Gull presentincluding Great Black backed Gulls.  2 Teals at Holden Wood.  min 16 Lapwing at Ogden.

A species that seems to be missed by me in recordings - Collared Dove - I had 4 at the junction of Alden Road and Holcombe Road 19-08-20, looked like a family party.  Pairs have been present for most of the summer at a a few places on Holcombe Road, Grane Road and Helmshore Road.   There is usually a pair on St Peter's Avenue and at the back of where I live.  1-2 pairs usually around Memorial Gardens, Haslingden too.23-08-20  - 1 female Tufted Duck at Jamestone 2 still.

23-08-20     female Tufted Duck at Jamestone 2 and Moorhen with 2 young at Troy.

24-8-20

Trip around Holden Wood, Heap Clough/Jamestone's and Musbury

Musbury - 3 Stonechat, 4 Kestrels min, and a mixed tit flock

Heap/Jamestone's - 1 Common Sandpiper, 9 Wheatears, 2 Whinchat, 2 Crossbill, 2 Grey Partridge on the Rossendale Way in Deep Clough min 6 Stonechat.  The biggest surprise I have ever probably had in Rossendale was when watching 2 Stonechat on the Rossendale Way in Deep Clough and a slightly smaller bird appeared.  When I looked I was shocked to see a Lesser Whitethroat out in such an open place like this with little cover except for rushes.

Holden Wood - 1 Wheatear in the Lapwing field was the highlight as now the reservoir is almost full and less birds are using it.
