Compstons 06.30 - 09.00 SSE 1-3 clear

Meadow Pipit - 482 counted flying south, probably a good number more.

Siskin - 37 south

Pied Wagtail - 7 south, 1 north

Chaffinch - 30 south and lots blogging

Redpoll - 12 south

Mistle thrush - 8 south

Grey Wagtail - 3 south

Swallow - 33 south

House martin - 3 small groups heard

Skylark - 2 south, 2 north

Goldfinch - 7 south

Greenfinch - 1 south

Also around the top plantation 1 mistle thrush singing, 2 chiffchaffs (1 singing), 2+ reed buntings, lots of tits (mainly coal) and finches (5+ bullfinches)

Walk round to Clowbridge via Limy valley

Around 50 more meadow pipits over plus 22 swallows and a few redpolls heard. 3 stonechats.

Spotted flycatcher just north of Limy lane and a willow warbler nearby

Clowbridge Reservoir

6 goosanders, 1 great-crested grebe. Most annoying bird of the day was a grebe which I first spotted in the south corner and initially assumed to be a little grebe owing to its size difference with the mallards and constant diving. Rather annoyingly the wretched thing took off north as I was approaching and revealed a white rearwing!! Didn't relocate it, unfortunately, so will have to go down as a possible black-necked (?) Frustrating!!!

Little on the return to Rawtenstall but 11 skylarks around Meadow Head, chiffchaffs on Hurst Lane and Waingate, lots of hirundines over Waingate (50+ swallows and a few house martins)

Andy
