Male singing outside our house (folly tip) at 08.45 this morning. Heard 3 times clearly, just the trill part, but i had to dash off to school with my daughter. When I got back, silence!, despite a good search even up towards Greenfold..
Would really have liked to check that bird for Bonellis as extremely early for our area.
4 W Warb, 1 Blackcap singing in the area.

The earliest wood warbler record I can find is 19th April 2011 (1 of yours Brian; link to the record shown below). I don't have many pre 2000 dates, but records for most migrant species have tended to get earlier post 2000
If the link doesn't work the record is on page 129 of the bird sightings section of the forum, under a thread titled dippers plus wood warbler
Spot on Kevin, found my hand written notes that was the very warm spring with quite a lot of early breeding records, considering the weather this spring there has been early records on bird guides, first Wood Warbler was 7th April in Sussex and one in Cheshire on same day as Craigs, also showing early Cuckoo and Common Whitethroat.
