3 members of ROC, IB, KL & DN, took part in The Summer Bird Race in glorious sunny weather and recorded an impressive total of 72 species. Records were also received from members who didn't take part in The Bird Race but were out birding, RI, PF, JH & AY and their sightings increased the total for the day to 76 species. The highlights were:
Tufted Duck, 2 males on Clough Bottom Res,
Goldeneye, female on Calf Hey,
Little Grebe, on HTL & Shortclough,
Sparrowhawk, Limy Valley,
Coot, 1 on Holden Wood & 2 pairs on Shortclough,
LRP, 2,
Golden Plover, pair,
Dunlin, 3 pair
Little Owl, 1,
L.E.O. calling bird,
Raven, c6,
Jay, just a single bird at Calf Hey,
Rook, present at Rook Hill,
Blackcap, the most numerous Warbler today with c20 noted,
Grasshopper Warbler, reeling bird at Holden Wood,
Whitethroat, 6 singing birds,
Garden Warbler, 1 singing along The Valley bottom,
Sorry missed yesterday, made up for lt today with a Lesser Whitethroat in same place as last year, on roadside between Ridshaw and Ridshaw close farms.
