Summer Bird Race, 5th June 2022

It was a rainy, quite cold and sometimes blustery day and two teams of 3 competed in the 2022 Summer Bird Race and with both teams seeing 66 species each the result was a honourable draw!

Some ROC members who could attend all day also contributed and the total number of birds seen in the Rossendale recording area for the day was 73 species, which, considering the poor weather, was a good total and highlights included:

Dabchick, 1 seen on Shortclough,

Peregrine,

Sparrowhawk,

Sanderling, 4 in The South Bay at Clowbridge,

Little Ringed Plover,

Kingfisher, 1 on The Irwell,

Whitethroat, 1 at Clough Bottom and a singing bird at Townsendfold,

Spotted Flycatcher, 1 at Cloughfold,

Raven,

Siskin, 1 in Grane,

Regards,

ROC Summer Birders.

Worth mentioning was the strange big carp party at shortclough, an oyk swimming and a mysterious choice of self deprecating private number plate.
