First visit to this reservoir yesterday. The reservoir is much larger than appears from the road. Very easy to walk around. Its big attraction is as a top gull roost site in Lancashire.
A scope is really needed although the reservoir has the advantage of making the gulls very easy to see from the far side, where bins would suffice. Gull flock c.200 probably before nocturnal roost when the numbers will build up.
Seen (1 only)great black-backed, 3 plus 4 sub-adult lesser black-backed gulls(not anywhere near as many as at Clough Bottom reservoir of this one)!At least 150+ herring gulls and 40/50 black-headed gulls(all moulted by now, into winter plumage). Any rare stuff(not seen by me)would show quite easily as the viewing conditions were/are excellent-the gulls really are not that distant, especially from the reservoir far side, walking round in an anti-clockwise direction. Not a birder to be seen! The very few dog walkers I spoke to said they had never seen a birder around the water. Ha! Ha! All this in spite of the excellent commentary in the Lancashire Bird Report 2025(due acknowledgement to Sarfraz here).
Also seen 4 tufted on the water, a flock c./10 feral pigeons, at least 3 magpies, 2 carrion crows ,a flock of 12 jackdaw, 1 kestrel hovering in distance plus what looked like a white wagtail flying low over the rough ground near the waterside. However, confusingly some pied wagtails(mainly first winter birds)show mainly grey back(not black) so it was probably one of these!
