AND NOW JUST LOOK AT THIS WHATS JUST COME INTO VISMIG (posted 1409hrs today Friday October 27th 2006) FROM KEITH CLARKSON AT REDMIRES, SHEFFIELD - They are certainly getting the Redwing.

Tipped off by the Dutch movements and a late rush of redwings seen by
Ricahrd Hill at Redmires last night - this morning proved to be the
best movement of redwings I have experienced in 30 years of
vismigging. A minimum of 30,000 birds moved south this morning.

In light south westerlies with low cloud over the moors to the west
and clearer skies to the east and lowlands, the first hour gave
little evidence of what was to follow with a steady S/SW movement of
parties of up to 70 redwing. This continued until 0850 when larger
parties of several hundreds of birds started to appear from the
North/North west moving SSE across a broad front of a least 5 miles
concentrating along leading lines.

In the next hour over 20,000 birds poured through, literally filling
the skies with birds and at times almost impossible to count on my
own.

By 1000h the scale of movement had subsided but evenso birds
continued to move through at height, in a SE direction and no sign of
stopping at a rate of 500 per hour until at least 1230h.

A all in all stunning spectacle which brought a tear to my eyes!

Oh yes, throw in nearly 10,000 woodies, 1200 starling, 700 fieldfare,
2 ring ouzel, 1 rock pipit and over 130 redpoll plus the usual
suspects and over 40,000 birds flew south in just over 4 hours.

Redwing 30,255 S/ SE and still counting
Wood pigeon 8405 S/SE
Starling 1203 SW
Fieldfare 763 S/SE
Redpoll 129 S/SE
Chaffinch 114 S/SE
Greenfinch 60 S/SW
Brambling 50 S/SE
Meadow pipit 45 S
Siskin 32 S
Goldfinch 17 S
Song Thrush 12 S SE
Ring Ouzel 2 S
Rock Pipit 1 S

Let's see what this afternoon brings.

I can't wait to see how it fits in with movements elsewhere.

Best wishes to all
Keith
