Thursday November 2nd 2006 - Haslingden Grane (Stoney Rake)
0645hrs - 1230hrs
Wind: NW 3-5mph variable
Movement: W/North West unless specified different

A follow on from yesterday, lots of Fieldfares, all going North West (as is usual around here at peak times). Best move period 0715-0815hrs, though movement carried on all morning and was still going on when I left at 1230hrs. When the wind had dropped completely it was obvious I missed hundreds or maybe a thousand or two which where just far to high to sustain counting them. Also more Redwing and Starling today.

Fieldfare: 5940 (breakdown: 0645-0715=336, 0715-0745=925, 0745-0815=990, 0815-0845=393, 0845-0915=467, 0915-0945=148, 0945-1015=650, 1015-1045=712, 1045-1115=777, 1115-1145=263, 1145-1215=159, 1215-1230= 120 - and still going through on leaving.
Starling: 502
Redwing: 328
Chaffinch: 120
Jackdaw: 54
Meadow Pipit: 9
Woodpigeon: 270 (13S)
Redpoll: 6
Pied Wagtail: 2
Siskin: 2
Greenfinch: 4
Great Spotted Woodpecker: 1 (S)

Cheers,
Bryan.

I thought thats a lot of Fieldfares in 3 hrs, Bryan - then I noticed you'd been watching for nearer 6.  How many flasks of Irish coffee did you take with you?

Hi Jim,

Great to hear from you and yes that would have been a Haslingden record if I had them in 3, but there again I think it might still be in 6.  I will have to check, but by strange coincidence the last major Fieldfare records for me what got up in the low thousands - was wait for it!! NOVEMBER 2ND 1986, and it was that very day that got me into the vismig side of birding, and probably some might say (certainly my wife), Ive never been the same since....

Its even a struggle with a little straight Nescafe to try and keep me wide awake, I would have thought the numbers may be a little corrupted if I where to indulge in the Irish Coffee!!

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for that.  Its great to be able to post the counts.  Its simply the same format I send to the vismig site, cut and pasted into the Rossendale Site. Jim's done a super job getting this forum going, just what we needed in Rossendale, It should be very rewarding to all.

Sadly for me Ste its all coming to a end very soon now on the vismig scene, I usually have my vismig season from Mid Sept to around the 10th November at the latest - and this coincides with more or less the majority of movement - starting in the main with the great Meadow Pipit/Swallow movements and ending with the Woodpigeons and the Thrushes.  Will however keep posting personal records throughout the year as and when appropriate.

Happy birding,

Bryan.

I can't claim all the credit for the forum.  All I've done was a bit of configuration, the site itself does all the clever work.

I'm a bit frustrated that I can't join in as much as I'd like 'cos my sightings, such as they are, are well outside Rossendale.  I've not posted to the GM forum yet, either, because my garden dicky birds are a bit small beer compared with the stuff others post.

See you soon.
