With this  weather and temperatures, southern winds and 18 degrees recorded yesterday, here are some strange things seen this week:

Feeding stations have been empty, I had stocked up as usual, last year I had used 40% more food. No Thrushes, Finches  or Brambling.

Mallards have been mating.

Blue Tits have taken nesting material into several nest boxes.

Robins singing on territory.

There is still a male Blackcap around.

Dragonfly seen today.

Two Peacock butterflies on a white wall in sunshine this morning.

There were two common toads feeding in wet area during the week.

One Pipestrelle  bat last night.

Several flowers and roses still thriving in the garden.

It is warmer and sunnier than usual that is for sure but I wont complain. We have no idea what will be around the corner. I saw a bat over the last week not in Rossendale but in Burnley. Is that unusual at this time of the year? It must have been a Pipestrelle as it was small. Dont German Blackcaps winter in the UK? I am not sure if they would winter in Rossendale as might be a bit cold. I cant recall any winter records for them from the reports.

Hi Sarfraz

I've had wintering blackcaps on my feeders at Gaghills in Waterfoot in 2003, 2008 & 2009.  I seem to rememember other records as well.

There are still two male Blackcaps around the feeding station here, this is as late as I have recorded them here.

Interesting about the Blackcaps - are they present because of the feeders? It does feel like a bit of an extended summer at times but today felt colder.
